How to Increase Fortnite Discovery CTR
Discovery shows your thumbnail at a small size, for a fraction of a second, next to dozens of competing maps. These are the composition and clarity habits that consistently help a thumbnail win that split-second — treat each as something to test on your own audience, not a guaranteed result.
1. Give the eye one clear subject
A thumbnail with one obvious focal point (a character, an object, a single word) reads faster than one with several competing elements. If a viewer needs more than a glance to figure out what they're looking at, most will have already scrolled past.
2. Push contrast, not clutter
Your subject should stand out clearly from its background — through color contrast, brightness, or a simple silhouette — rather than blending into a busy scene. Small thumbnails lose fine detail first; contrast is what survives at 200 pixels wide.
3. Design for the smallest size it'll be shown at
Check your thumbnail at actual Discovery-tile size, not full-screen. Long text, small fonts, or anything requiring fine detail to read will disappear at that scale. Keep text to a few bold words at most. If you can't tell what it says or shows in a quick glance, a scrolling player won't either.
4. Represent the island honestly
Beyond being an Epic content-policy requirement (see UEFN Thumbnail Size Guidelines), a thumbnail that oversells what the map actually delivers tends to produce a click followed by a fast quit — and early-quit behavior is a signal Discovery can weigh against you regardless of how many clicks the thumbnail got.
5. Keep a consistent, recognizable style across your maps
If you run more than one island, a consistent visual style (same logo placement, same color language) helps repeat players recognize your work at a glance — while each individual thumbnail should still stay unique per Epic's duplicate-thumbnail rule.
6. Test instead of assuming
None of the above guarantees a specific lift — Discovery performance depends on your audience, genre, and where in the catalog your map sits. Compare variants against each other (OP Visions' Arena mode is built for exactly this) instead of shipping your first draft as final.
